From the time we left Macon, we've been learning every day how to do school on the road. Since most of our days have been spent driving, this means doing school in the van, and it looks a little like this:
The first thing to get packed (before any camping gear or personal supplies) was all of their textbooks, workbooks and binders. These are stored in a drawer under Julia's seat for easy access. They also have writing desks and a full complement of school supplies, like pencils, scissors, glue, crayons, and markers. Each week I check in with their school to see what topics are being covered, and their curriculum is set. For Grace this has meant that she works on all subject areas every single day, with a healthy dose of reading thrown in too (on the first day she read three chapter books, which put a serious dent in our supplies). And just like any regular school day, the girls get tired of doing their work, but normally we can get them back on track without too much trouble.
Aside from reaching our first major destination today, Glacier National Park, the big school things happening are Grace's science test (yep, she'll be taking that just like her classmates) and Julia's spelling test (she's been working on her words all week). Of course, the ultimate test of how well we've managed their school is how they perform once they return to Alex II.
