Wilderness Safety Skills

There are lots of great resources to teach kids wilderness safety, like Hunter, the Search Dog's Wilderness Safety Site.  We've camped a fair amount with the girls, so they already know many of the guidelines, but good lessons are always worth repeating.  The next time you're in the woods, remember these tips:
  • Stay with a buddy and NEVER go off alone.
  • If you get lost in the woods, SIT and STAY. This makes it easier for someone to find you.
  • Always answer when someone calls to you.
  • Wear something bright.  This makes it easier for someone to spot you.
  • Carry emergency supplies.  Grace and Julia have a pack with a whistle, a small first aid kit, water bottles, granola bars, and an emergency mylar space blanket to keep them warm.
  • Do your best to stay dry and warm.
  • Remember that people who care are looking for you, and they won't stop until they've found you.
Finally, we always remind the girls that they won't get in trouble if they get lost.  If they do get lost, they know that we're looking for them every minute.  We just want them to be safe.

Happy hiking, everyone!
